Goals & Purposes

The Museum of Photography is an institution open to development which aims at the conservation, distribution and enrichment of its material by collecting and exhibiting. As the only state run museum dedicated solely to photography its mission is to present the different usages of photography, as they appear today and as they were established in the history of the medium. The goal of the museum is to cover a wide spectrum, by showing the social as well as the artistic aspect of the medium, as this results from documentary photography or from other documents or from works which feature a more plastic or cinematographic dimension.

The Museum of Photography Thessaloniki aims at functioning as a place of memory, a meeting point for artists and the public as well as a place for discovery. Its basic policy is to cultivate the public’s “visual literacy” concerning photography and to present the medium’s different usages and approaches–as they have developed from 19th century until today.
