The Thessaloniki Museum of Photography participates in the 15th European Cultural Days at the Museum Europäischer Kulturen in Berlin, with the photo exhibition “Thessaloniki. Looking at Time Through Moments. Photographs 1900-2017”, which opens on Thursday, August 9, 2018. The photos afford a glimpse into life in Thessaloniki from the end of the 19th century until today. All works are on loan from city’s museums, institutions, private collectors and photographers, while Hercules Papaioannou, director of the ThMP, compiled and curated the photographs.
Various forms of presentation, including readings, performances, presentations, concerts, and talks, enrich viewers’ understanding of the images, as the city of Thessaloniki is identified with shared European cultural history as well as with historical and contemporary migration. Its multiculturalism and the lively, engaged life of its society are part of its particular attraction. Finally, musical and culinary delights typical of Thessaloniki make these four summer weeks into a special occasion in Berlin.

Museums, institutions, private collectors and photographers who loaned the works displayed in the exhbition are: Photographic Archive / Museum for the Macedonian Struggle, Hellenic Cultural Organization, Benaki Museum / Photographic Archives, Makis and Simos Bensasson Archive / Collection of the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki, Municipal Centre for Historical Research and Documentation of Volos, Thessaloniki Film Festival Digital Archive, Georgios Konstantinidis Archive, Yiannis Megas Collection, A. Tzamalas Family Archive / Manos Malamidis Historical and Collective Archives, Eleni Hertoura Family Archive, Aris Papatzikas Collection, Christos Broufas Collection, Vyron Mitos Collection, Vangelis Fyssikas Collection, Aris Georgiou, Sterghios Tsioumas, Ino Ioannidou, Nikos Panayiotopoulos, Roland Laboye, Nikos Koukis, Dimitris Sofikitis, Ingo Dünnebier, Stratos Kalafatis, Dimitris Tosidis, Kosmas Pavlidis, Kostis Argyriadis.

The “2018 European Cultural Days: Thessaloniki | Facets of a City” is an MEK project in cooperation with the Greek embassy in Germany, the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, the Heinrich Böll Stiftung in Thessaloniki, the Zentrum Modernes Griechenland at the Freie Universität Berlin, Hellas Filmbox, the association ‘Respekt für Griechenland e.V.’, and the Greek communities in Berlin.
