In this category, the central core of the collection of the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography is the purchase of a large part of the exhibition Image and Icon, that was curated by John Stathatos and first presented in the framework of the events of the Cultural Capital of Europe, Thessaloniki 1997, followed by the exhibition's international tour. It is a review and assessment of contemporary Greek photography in the period between 1975 and 1995.
Similarly, the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography proceeded to the purchase of works by 10 new Greek photographers presented at the exhibition New Images held at the Museum of Photography in December 2001 and curated by John Stathatos. The section of Contemporary Greek Photography also includes a number of works by acclaimed contemporary Greek creators.
