Space. Speech. Speed – Mischa Kuball

Kuball

20 September – 12 October 2012 / DYNAMO project-space

Co-organization: Goethe-Institut, TMP, DYNAMO project – space
With the financial support of Goethe-Institut Thessaloniki

Three disco balls are placed in a totally dark room. They are all hanging from the same height and are illuminated by three words reading “Space-Speech-Speed”. One of the disco balls remains still while the others are ceaselessly moving, rupturing the space continuum with fragments of light and letters. Space limits and matter seem to dissolve. The installation creates the sense of a world alluding to the day after the Bing Bang. On the one hand chaotic and on the other submitted to the rules of a logical reconstruction – as that is commanded by words.

Mischa Kuball lives and works in Dusseldorf where he was born in 1959. He holds the Chair for Media Art at the Kunsthochschule für Medien University of Karlsruhe. He has been working in indoor and outdoor spaces, creating dynamic works using the light as his primary medium since the 1980’s. The core of his work lies in experimentations with the active and interactive use of light through installations, photographs and works in public spaces thus redefining the body, the senses and social relations. This specific installation is part of a thematic series of works which began in 1996 in Wuppertal, Germany; similar works by Mischa Kuball have been presented in Toronto, Canada and Pittsburg in the United States of America.
