_In Situ. Constructed Identities

Νikos Evangelopoulos
“I become the place where I am”.

Nikos Evangelopoulos works’ are always adapted in situ. The constructed photograph is itself a visual arts incident, by encompassing all arts in order to overcome the Real (realistic).
In the end the medium is so intertwined with representation –with the mirror- that is overcomes its specificity and can be used as a means of exploring.
Photographs become photo-metaphors: they use their information like a form of writing, like shadows of ideas which are recorded on our collective memory. In this context, the viewer encounters photographic works and collages created, sculptures created by layers of paper; in this manner realism, abstraction and randomness intertwine in a dialogue between art and life in either a poetic, a psychoanalytic or a narrative manner. These interchanges which explore the limits of the image and its presence have become an intrinsic part of the artist’s journey this past fifteen years – an autobiographic search.

Atonement of Shadow
Maria Mitzali

One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.
Carl Jung

Τhe idea of the work, which is specifically designed for this space, is to create a small temporary shrine in the centre of the city dedicated to the body, showing in public the daily private “ritual” of washing. An ode what is gone, to what changes, to what is alive, to what is human.
These projections blend in with the architectural structure of the place. It is at home, at the private space of one’s bathroom where the intrinsic relationship of one with his body appears. There effortlessly, under the shower, comes a moment of self-awareness which has no fear, no shame nor guilt and is nothing more than a purification and then reconciliation with what we tend to dismiss, to push aside – with what Jung described as the Shadow.
